Big Garden Bird Watch January 2013

Today is the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch 2013 and after a late start and another mass clearing of snow, I settled down to cover the 12.15 to 1.15 feeding frenzy in our back garden.  We get a fair number of birds that visit from Sparrows to Greenfinches, Pheasants to Woodpeckers and even voles, squirrels and sheep if they could get in.

Today was no different but we also got a few more visitors.  Now this could be due to the fact that we have a significant amount of snow on the ground and have done for over a week.

we had a surprise visitor in the form of a Jay.  When we first moved in we had a Jay visit but he disappeared.  We haven’t seen one since which is over 10 years.  They are stunning birds, a gorgeous peach colour with an iridescent blue flash on their wings.  He had a bit of an altercation with a blackbird on the sunflower seeds but grabbed a beak full and was off.
